TIRED OF NOT SLEEPING!!

Sleep is the essential ingredient for a stress free life.

Women need up to nine and a half hours compared to an average of eight hours for men. During sleep we are at peace, our body is relaxed, our pulse rate drops and our body temperature falls.

Those of us who cannot sleep lie there, eyes moving from side to side, listening to our alarm clocks slowly ticking the hours away. We worry about how drained and tired we may feel the next morning and how we can cope with another day deprived of sleep.

Many of us are often worrying totally out of perspective about all and sundry!!

The more tired we are the larger small problems become.

Have you noticed that after a good night’s sleep how that enormous problem you worried about the day before, now seems so insignificant today,

We need to have some help here, put our troubles into perspective and find some inner peace and calm.

There is help available out there!!

Before things get too out of hand we need to admit that we have a problem. Our G.P may be able to prescribe sleeping pills for us but these are not the only answer and should not be relied upon.

So, a little thought and a little self help may aid our problem sleeping.

Try not to over stimulate your mind or body before settling down for the night.

Watching some horror movie, listening to heavy rock music or reading a book that has you sitting tightly on the edge of the seat, will have your brain screaming along like a runaway train.

Avoid stimulants such as coffee, tea or alcohol, they have the effect of dehydrating the body, stimulating the mind and will probably have you heading for the bathroom in the early hours, in order to quench your raging thirst and visit the loo.

Instead try a warm milky drink and a long warm soak in the bath surrounded by candles and gentle music, this will help relax and cleanse body and mind.

Lay on a comfortable bed in a well ventilated room whilst surrounded by subdued lighting, deep gentle breathing, whilst trying to drift off will assist relaxation. Try and think of a favourite place, as you breathe steadily feel the tension slip away; your limbs will feel light and relaxed, giving you a floating on air sensation. Become part of the sensation, allow it to steadily filter from your toes through to the top of your temple, just release all that tension and let it go.

Herbal remedies can have great benefits and can assist us in our quest to find perfect harmony through sleep.

  • v  Lavender has a calming effect a few drops on your pillow or in the bath may   be beneficial.
  • v  Camomile is renowned for its calming properties, used in camomile tea.
  • v  Peppermint soothing for headaches and nervous tension.
  • v  Valerian is widely used and a common relaxant found in many over the counter preparations in health stores and pharmacies.
  • v  Lemon Balm is also soothing for headaches and has been used for hundreds of years, used in a refreshing tea.

Herbalists train for a minimum of four years to qualify in assisting all forms of ailments; it may be well worth a visit as they are experts in their field of using gentle non-habit –forming herbs.

Above all address the problem, sleep is part of our  lifestyle and is essential for our well-being many people suffer sleepless nights you are not alone and can get help.

Self help is always a better solution then potions and pills. Remember the mind is a delicate entity, it needs good maintenance, gentle care and most of all treat it with respect.
